Scope and Content Reverse face of gravestone commemorating Alexander Wilson and Mary Wilson, Kirkliston churchyard, West Lothian This gravestone commemorates Alexander Wilson, a blacksmith, who died in 1770, and his wife Mary. The hammer and crown signify Alexander's trade as a blacksmith. The crown is a symbol of the Incorporation of Hammermen, craftsmen whose work involved the use of hammer on metal. The leaf-scrolls and roses are decorative, but suggest regeneration. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
