Scope and Content Gravestone commemorating George Horoson, Ettleton burial ground, Scottish Borders This gravestone commemorates George Horoson, who died in 1728. His gravestone bears many similarities to portraits at Castleton Old Churchyard, presumably being the work of the same mason. This relief portrait on the back of the stone shows George, who wears a wig, long coat and hose typical of the period. In his hands, George holds emblems which signify death and mortality, a single bone, a skull and an hourglass. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
