Scope and Content Former handloom weavers' cottage, Church Street, Kilbarchan, Renfrewshire Kilbarchan has a history of hand-loom weaving going back to the early 18th century, when linen cloth was being produced. In the 1820s there was a marked increase in the demand for cotton hand-loom weavers, and the village expanded to meet it. This view shows the oldest weaver's cottage in the village, built for a linen weaver and draper, and in the care of the National Trust for Scotland. The building was probably originally thatched. It now contains a demonstration hand-loom. After the 1820s expansion, competition from power looms hit wages for hand-loom weavers very seriously. Many weavers left the trade, and others changed to weaving woollens. The last handloom weaver in Kilbarchan worked into the 1950s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
