Scope and Content Newark Shipbuilding Yard, Port Glasgow, Renfrewshire This yard was established in 1903 by four Ferguson brothers, who left the Paisley firm of Fleming and Ferguson to set up their own firm The yard built relatively small vessels. From the 1960s it has a succession of owners but is still working in 2000. This view shows the main entrance to the yard, with men gathering for the start of the lunch hour. The vessel is being built from pre-assembled welded sections, with the upper bow section still to come. This yard was acquired about 1990 by a consortium led by Sir Ross Belch, formerly managing director of the major Scott-Lithgow combine (of which Fergusons was a part}. Since then it has flourished, and expanded. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
