Scope and Content Toward Lighthouse, Argyll This lighthouse was built in 1812 by the Cumray Lighthouse Trust. With its other light on the Small Cumbrae it lit the main approach to the harbours on the upper Firth of Clyde. It was later taken over by the Clyde Lighthouses Trust. This view shows the tapering masonry tower, with one of the keepers' houses behind. To the right is one of the windows of the engine-house for the foghorn, added later in the 19th century. The lighthouse had been automated by 1979. The Clyde Lighthouses Trust was absorbed into the Clyde Port Authority when it was created in 1966, and the Toward light is now managed by its privatised successor, Clydeport.
