Hilton, Earn Railway Bridge Detail of abutment

SC 553370

Description Hilton, Earn Railway Bridge Detail of abutment

Date 1/8/1978

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 553370

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Viaduct over river Earn, Hilton, Perthshire This viaduct was originally constructed by the Edinburgh, Perth and Dundee Railway as part of its line from Ladybank to a junction with the Scottish Central Railway at Hilton. It was later rebuilt, probably in the 1880s or 90s. This view shows the north abutment of the viaduct, from the south west, showing the accommodation arch on that side. Note the very fine quality of the masonry, characteristic of much 1840s railway building. There are six inclined pads of masonry on each abutment which suggest that the original spans were cast-iron arches; the pads look too small for timber construction.
