Scope and Content 'Verbum Dominus in Aeternum' stone, Borthwick churchyard, Midlothian Who this stone commemorates is now unknown, as the inscription is badly weathered and illegible. The cherub represents the soul's ascent to heaven. Beneath, the crossbones, hourglass and skull signify death and the mortality of man. Symbolising faith, the open book reads 'VERBUM DOMINIS MANET IN AETERNUM' ('The Word of the Lord Remain Eternally'). The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
