Scope and Content Gravestone of James Mickel, Ecclesmachan churchyard, West Lothian This gravestone commemorates James Mickel, a tenant farmer at Drumforth, who died in 1726, aged 66. Symbolising regeneration and renewal, the cat-like face of the Green Man on this gravestone was fairly widespread in lowland Scotland, especially in the 18th century. A pair of skulls perched on the top of the gravestone symbolise mortality and death. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
