Scope and Content East face, gravestone commemorating Agnes Moffat, Ecclesmachan churchyard, West Lothian This gravestone commemorates Agnes Moffat, wife of a local farmer, who died in 1733 aged 66. A neatly wigged cherub represents the soul ascending to heaven, with scrolls of greenery replacing the outer feathers of the wings. Greenery suggests regeneration, emphasising the message of salvation. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
