Scope and Content Gravestone of John Craig, Temple churchyard, Midlothian This gravestone commemorates John Craig, a local tenant farmer at 'Outorstoun', who died in 1742 aged 68. Flanking the inscription panel are two bands of decoration composed of skulls, crossbones and crossed scythes and arrows: the weapons of death. Each of these represent mortality and death. A winged cherub symbolises the soul's ascent to heaven. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
