Scope and Content Gravestone of John Paterson, Temple churchyard, Midlothian This gravestone commemorates John Paterson, a miner, who died in 1746 aged 65. Three fellow miners set up this memorial to John. 'Hora Fugit' (The Hour Flies) reminds us that life is all too brief, a sentiment echoed by the hourglass, skull and bones. Within the roundel are tools of a miner, including a mariner's compass (used by miners), driving wedges and a mash hammer. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
