Dundee, Princes Street, Lower Dens Mills, Interior View showing humidifier

SC 543390

Description Dundee, Princes Street, Lower Dens Mills, Interior View showing humidifier

Date 17/5/1978

Collection John R Hume

Catalogue Number SC 543390

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Lower Dens Mill, Dundee, Angus This flax-spinning mill was built by Baxter Brothers, and became part of one of the largest linen complexes in the world, supplying yarn to be woven and finished in the Upper Dens Factory, immediately to the north. This view shows a humidifier, use to increase the moisture content of the air in one of the flats in the mill. This was necessary in dry weather, as flax is best processed in high humidity. The Dens complex, by that time in the ownership of Low and Bonar, was closed in 1978. Subsequently the 1850 Upper Dens Factory was converted into housing, and the Lower Dens Mill housed a range of small businesses. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
