Scope and Content Formal garden, Pollok House, Pollokshaws Road, Glasgow, Strathclyde The formal garden in this photograph consists of an arrangement of hedges, plants and gravel, known as a parterre. While pleasant to walk through, parterres were also designed to be viewed from above and were often laid out in very intricate designs. Stairs lead from the parterre to an avenue of rhododendrons, leading through woodland. Sir John Stirling Maxwell (1867-1956) was responsible for making many changes to the grounds of Pollok House. This parterre was probably of his design, having carried out research at other country houses. Sir John also employed the architect Sir Robert Rowand Anderson (1834-1921) to create terraces and pavilions to the south of the house. Pollok House, in Glasgow, is surrounded by extensive parkland and gardens. Now in the care of The National Trust for Scotland, both house and gardens are open to the public, and visitors can explore formal gardens, planted woodland and modern demonstration gardens.
