Scope and Content The White House, now The Old Schoolhouse, Swanston Village, Edinburgh The White House, an 18th-century schoolhouse, was renamed, appropriately, The Old Schoolhouse, in 1992. Until it closed in 1931, it was the local school for children from Swanston and from as far afield as Bowbridge, Lothianburn and Dreghorn. The former schoolhouse, a whitewashed two-storeyed building standing in its own large wooded garden, once formed the heart of the 18th-century village community at the foot of the bare slopes of the Pentland Hills. After the school closed in 1931, it continued for many years as the centre of village life as a venue for evening classes in needlework and carpentry, whist-drives, Burns' suppers and Christmas parties. It remained as the only house to have a telephone. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
