Scope and Content Detail of the Romanesque doorway, Duddingston Parish Church, Old Church Lane, Duddingston Village, Edinburgh Duddingston Church, one of the oldest churches in Scotland still in regular use, was built on land gifted by King David I to the Abbot of Kelso in 1130. The basic structure of the church is Romanesque, with 17th- and 18th-century additions. This figure, one of several carved on the side of the original Romanesque doorway in the south wall of the church, shows Christ, in a long robe, on the cross. An interesting original external feature is the arch over the doorway, carved with a zigzag pattern. The door jambs have several carved figures, including Christ Crucified, a cockerel and a man, possibly St Peter. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
