Scope and Content The 'loupin-on-stane', Duddingston Parish Church, Old Church Lane, Duddingston Village, Edinburgh Duddingston Church, one of the oldest churches in Scotland still in regular use, was built on land gifted by King David I to the Abbot of Kelso in 1130. The basic structure of the church is Romanesque, with 17th- and 18th-century additions. This short flight of rough stone steps leading onto a small square platform, stands just outside the gates of the church, opposite the Session House. This 'loupin-on-stane' (Scots) was built in the 17th century as a platform for mounting a horse. In the 17th century, when many parishioners travelled to church from outlying areas on horseback, the 'loupin-on-stane' was of great practical use for elderly or obese gentlemen, or for modest ladies, as a mounting (or dismounting) block.
