Scope and Content The hall, Duddingston House, Milton Road West, Duddingston, Edinburgh Duddingston House, the former manor house of Duddingston Village, has been described as one of the finest 18th-century houses in Britain. It was designed by Sir William Chambers for the 8th Earl of Abercorn, and completed in 1768. The two-storeyed hall has a swagged frieze, and an elaborate ceiling with hexagonal compartments. An elegant staircase, with a handrail supported alternately by straight and serpentine balusters, leads to small first-floor landings on either side. King Edward VII (1902-10) considered buying the house and estate of Duddingston as a royal residence, but, because of 'some legal difficulties that were in the way', chose the estate of Sandringham instead.
