Scope and Content West Mill, Dean Village, Edinburgh Dean Village, one of Edinburgh's most ancient and picturesque villages, lies in the deep river valley of the Water of Leith beneath the tall arches of the Dean Bridge. It was originally the largest of Edinburgh's old milling settlements. The south-east wall of the West Mill is five storeys high, built over twin sluice arches on the Water of Leith. The fenestration is relieved by a central tier of circular openings. The water, which came from a weir upstream of the village, drove two internal wheels, each 4.3m in diameter and 3.6m wide, and was then discharged through two sluice arches, low on the south-east wall, back into the main flow of the river.
