Scope and Content The Water of Leith Bridge, Dean Village, Edinburgh Dean Village, one of Edinburgh's most ancient and picturesque villages, lies in the deep river valley of the Water of Leith beneath the tall arches of the Dean Bridge. It was originally the largest of Edinburgh's old milling settlements. In the middle of the village is an 18th-century stone bridge, built with a single span across the river, which once carried the main road out of Edinburgh. The building on the left is the former Dean School, opened in 1875 by the Edinburgh School Board. The old bridge carried 18th-century travellers on the Dean Path, the ancient coach route and the shortest way to Queensferry. Here, a ferry would take passengers on an hour or two's journey across the Firth of Forth to Fife and the north. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
