Scope and Content Dean Village, Edinburgh Dean Village, one of Edinburgh's most ancient and picturesque villages, lies in the deep river valley of the Water of Leith beneath the tall arches of the Dean Bridge. It was originally the largest of Edinburgh's old milling settlements. The village, with no straight streets, forms a little enclave in the valley of the river. The houses and other buildings are gathered round the mills which continued to flourish until the rise of the giant grain mills of Leith in the late 19th century. The village was an active milling community in the 16th century. In 1734 the Dean mills were taken over by the Incorporation of Baxters (bakers) who built or rebuilt 11 mills on this short stretch of river. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
