Scope and Content View of Torrisdale Square at Torrisdale Castle, Argyll and Bute Torrisdale Castle was originally a castellated Georgian Gothic house, designed for General Keith Macalister in 1815. In the early 20th century, extensive north and south wings were added to the house, using the same Gothic style. The farm buildings are known as Torrisdale Square and were probably erected around 1850. They form a U-plan around a courtyard. The steading is rubble-built and has a small castellated and corbelled tower as an entrance. The estate is home to the Macalister Hall family who have owned Torrisdale since 1890. Torrisdale Castle, built in 1815 and extended in the early 1900s, is the centrepiece of the estate and is described by many as Kintyre's finest property. The opening is arched, with projecting impost bands. The windows have plain surrounds and the doors and lower windows have rectangular hood-moulds, or labels. The roof is slated and is hipped over the tower. The tower contains a dovecot. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
