Scope and Content Former lace factories, Newmilns and Greenholm, Ayrshire These two factories were among many built from about 1880 to make machine lace, and other fabrics. Lace technology was brought in from Nottingham, and the Irvine Valley became the world's leading producer of machine lace. This view shows the frontages of two of the more elaborate buildings in Greenholm. On the right is the works of Haddow, Aird and Crerar, and on the left the yellow-brick former Irvinebank Powerloom Factory. By the 1960s falling demand led to the closure of many of the lace mills and other textile factories, including these two, which were taken over by the Vesuvius Crucible Co, an American company.
