Scope and Content Tayport Harbour, Fife This harbour was rebuilt in 1847 by the Edinburgh and Northern Railway as its northern terminus, and the base for a freight-only train ferry service to Broughty Ferry. It has a single large basin protected by a long pier, and two shorter piers to the west This view shows the basin from the north west, with the long pier on the left. The ramp on the right appears to have been the one used by the train ferries. The small boats at the end were typical of those using the harbour in the 1970s. This harbour was superseded in 1878 by the opening of the Tay Bridge, but was brought back into use in 1879-87 after the 1878 bridge collapsed and until its successor was completed. Some houses have now been built on the east quay. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
