Scope and Content View of house at rear of No 26 Melville Street, Perth This early 19th-century cottage is situated at the rear of a Perth tenement building. An interesting stone balustrade cut with Gothic arches leads down to the house with its picturesque stonework details. This shows the house which is built of stone rubble. It has a doorway with a dentil-patterned cornice, and a central ornate upper window. The cross cut into the stone at wall-head emphasises the position of the doorway, and may represent an arrow-slit. It is unclear why this small house should have such ornamental details and a specially designed balustrade leading down to it. Perhaps it was a charity cottage built by a wealthy benefactor who could afford such decorative whimsies. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
