Description View of 4-14 Moray Place from South

Collection Records of the Scottish National Buildings Record, Edinburgh, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 520274

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of ED 736

Scope and Content Nos 3-13 Moray Place, Edinburgh Moray Place, designed in 1822 by James Gillespie Graham as the huge polygonal showpiece of his new housing development on the Earl of Moray's estate, has been described in the way of private building as 'the most splendid thing in Edinburgh'. This hexastyle colonnade links two of the pedimented Doric columned centrepieces on one of the longer sides of Moray Place. The Earl of Moray lived at No 28, enjoying the scenic advantages of a development to which his financial contribution had comprised some legal fees and the architect's commission: all the buildings and amenities were funded by the feuars themselves.
