Scope and Content Windmill tower, Shore, Leith, Edinburgh This is the stump of a windmill designed by Robert Mylne and built to crush lead ore from the Leadhills/Wanlockhead area for export to Holland for use in glazing ceramic products. It was later used as a signal tower. This view shows the mill from the north west. It is now integrated with the 19th century tenement to the right and the public house whose single-storey extension appears as the base of the building in this view. At the time of its construction the mill was at the landward end of the east pier which protected the river-mouth port of Leith. Much of the trade of Leith was at that period with Holland and with other northern European countries. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
