Scope and Content Irvine Station, Ayrshire This is a two-platform through station on an embankment, opened in 1839 by the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway. There are buildings on both sides of the track, originally both entering at ground level, with platforms at first floor level. This view shows the south-bound platform building from the west, after demolition of surrounding structures. Note the flat-pitched roof, characteristic of early stations, and the enclosed staircase on the right. Since 1977 the approach to this platform has been remodelled, with a ramp running up from the left. The enclosed stair and the adjacent lavatory block have been demolished. The main building survives as part of one of the oldest stations in Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
