Scope and Content 19th-century view of the Lawnmarket, Edinburgh The Lawnmarket or 'Land Market' ran from the top of west Bow, now part of Upper Bow, to the old Tolbooth that adjoined St Giles. Here traders or 'lawn merchants' set up their stalls on market day. The Lawnmarket, bordered by tall buildings, formed the greatest open space, with the exception of the Grassmarket, within the walls of the Old Town. Here, produce from the land, including meat, vegetables, linen and wool cloth was sold. In the 17th century the houses bordering the Lawnmarket were those of merchants and tradesmen, but 'the gentlemen's mansions and goodliest houses' were 'obscurely founded' in the by-lanes and closes.
