Scope and Content St Stephen's Church, Edinburgh, from St Vincent Street St Stephen's Church, at the north end of St Vincent Street, was designed by William Henry Playfair in 1826, and completed in 1828. Described as 'of vast scale, Baroque power and Grecian severity', it is square in plan and set diagonally to suit the site. The church itself is square, but sited diagonally at the end of the street, completely obscuring the view to the north. The tower, which dominates the neighbourhood, is also square, and has a massive tunnel porch raised well above street level. The church, which dominates the long vista from the top of Howe Street, was built at a cost of £18,975. It is an extraordinary design, and makes good use of a difficult site, cleverly conforming to the oblique line of St Stephen's Street on its west side. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
