Inverness, Ness Bridge General View

SC 511086

Description Inverness, Ness Bridge General View

Date 1977

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 511086

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Ness Bridge, Inverness, Inverness-shire This is a pre-stressed concrete continuous-beam bridge over the river Ness. It was designed by Sir Murdoch Macdonald and partners. The beam is carried on slender piers with rounded cutwaters. This view shows the simplicity and elegance of the design. The apparent weight of the structure is reduced by the raised band below the parapet. This bridge replaced a much-loved - and hated by motorists - suspension bridge that was a noted local landmark. Its situation in the middle of the town is a sensitive one, hence the care taken in its design. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
