Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Scope and Content Pierhead light, Fraserburgh Harbour, Aberdeenshire This light is on the end of the massive north breakwater pier at Fraserburgh, which was built between 1855 and about 1880, the last section being constructed of mass concrete, as is this light tower. This view shows the light from the south west. The harbour is in a very exposed setting, hence the massive end of the pier and the height of the tower. The section of the tower below the lantern is curved to deflect breaking waves. This light is known locally as the 'Golden Horn', Since 1976 it has acquired a red band about half way up. The harbour was a major centre for herring fishing in the late 19th century, and is still an important fishing port. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
