Scope and Content Cast-iron road bridge, Methlick, Aberdeenshire This was an unusual bridge, with a 12.2m cast-iron arched main span and a single segmental masonry flood-relief arch on each side. It was built by J and W Smith. This view shows a detail of the cast iron railings, which were remarkably slender in section. They resemble in some respects Robert Stevenson's design for lighthouse gallery railings, which the Smiths may have seen. There were several cast-iron bridges still in use in upland Aberdeenshire in the 1970s. Most have now been strengthened with some loss of original character, and there were proposals to carry out works to this bridge in 1998-9. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
