Scope and Content Improvement Period fields on the southern shore of Loch Lomond The area of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park contains a rich variety of archaeological sites and historic landscapes, which continue to have a major impact on the environment today. These enclosed fields and woodlands on the southern shore of Loch Lomond were laid out during the Improvement Period (c.1750-1850). In the foreground stands Balloch Castle, surrounded by its policies, now open to the public as Balloch Country Park. During the Improvement Period (c.1750-1850) farms throughout lowland Scotland were reorganised in order to make agriculture more efficient. The resulting patchworks of enclosed fields shape our view of how the countryside should look today. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
