Scope and Content Graving dock, Peterhead Harbour, Aberdeenshire This graving dock was built for the inspection and repair of the whaling vessels using the harbour in the 1850s. It was designed by Thomas Stevenson. This view shows the dock from the south, with a deep-water trawler under repair. Note the use of the stepped side of the dock to support a wooden shore keeping the ship upright. The bow of the vessel has been cut away for inserting new plates. The construction of this dock was necessitated by the scale of the Greenland whaling fleet operating from Peterhead. It was paid for by the proprietors of the vessels concerned.
