Scope and Content Girdleness Lighthouse, Aberdeenshire This lighthouse was built by the Northern Lighthouse Board to designs by Robert Stevenson. It marks the mouth of the river Dee and the entrance to Aberdeen Harbour. It was originally built with lanterns at two levels, for distinctiveness. This view shows the lighthouse from the seaward side, with its tall enclosing wall. Note the lower lantern on corbels near the base of the tower. It has long been disused, and retains its square panes. The upper lantern was originally similar. As with all the other Northern Lighthouse Board lights it has been automated, and the keepers' houses are now private residences. The original upper lantern was moved to Inchkeith for experiments, and is now in the National Museums of Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
