Description Aberdeen, Girdleness Lighthouse General View

Date 18/8/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 504484

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Girdleness Lighthouse, Aberdeenshire This lighthouse was built by the Northern Lighthouse Board to designs by Robert Stevenson. It marks the mouth of the river Dee and the entrance to Aberdeen Harbour. It was originally built with lanterns at two levels, for distinctiveness. This view shows the lighthouse from the landward side, with the flat-roofed keepers' houses in front of it, and the engine-room for the foghorn to the right. Note the lower lantern on corbels near the base of the tower. It has long been disused. This lighthouse was one of Robert Stevenson's masterpieces, and is a notable land, as well as sea mark. As with all the other Northern Lighthouse Board lights it has been automated, and the keepers' houses are now private residences. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
