Scope and Content The pedestal tomb of James Baxter, Liberton Parish Churchyard, Kirkgate, Liberton, Edinburgh The old churchyard of Liberton Parish Church dates from the time of the old parish church which stood on the site until it was demolished in 1814. The churchyard, which surrounds the church on four sides, contains many interesting old headstones. The pedestal tomb of James Baxter, 'Taylor in Gilmertoun', who died in 1737, stands to the south-west of the church. This tall pedimented stone is carved with crude Corinthian pilasters, and a Green Man, a grotesque face sprouting greenery. The Green Man, a symbol of mortality, is found carved on 18th-century headstones in many Scottish Lowland areas. It has a human or cat-like face, a creased forehead, and greenery sprouting from its cheeks, forehead, nose or mouth. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
