Scope and Content Heriot Row, Edinburgh, looking east Heriot Row is an elegant south-facing terrace overlooking the wooded gardens of Queen Street. Designed by Robert Reid in 1802-3 as two sections, divided by Howe Street, it was the first street to be built in the northern New Town. The Row was designed as a long palace front, with houses of only two storeys, except for the centrepiece and end pavilions, which have three. Modern additions to the terrace include dormer windows, and an extra storey to some of the two-storeyed houses. With its open view to the south overlooking Queen Street Gardens, Heriot Row has the most privileged site in the northern New Town. From the start of building, there was a keen demand for feus (plots), and the terrace was largely completed by 1808. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
