Scope and Content Bridge of Newe, Aberdeenshire This bridge was built at the expense of Sir Charles Forbes, Baronet, of Newe and Edinglassie, from a bequest by his grand-uncle, John Forbes of Newe. It is a three-span bridge, with a central cast-iron arch flanked by masonry arches. This view shows the central span and one of the approach arches. The flatness of the cast iron span is remarkable. It has four ribs tied together with wrought-iron rods, and linked below the road surface by brick arches running the length of the span. The bridge was designed by John Willet and the contractors were James Abernethy and Co, both of Aberdeen. The central span of this bridge was renewed in the mid 1990s, keeping the original profile and outer arched girders. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
