Inverarish Mill General View

SC 494938

Description Inverarish Mill General View

Date 21/5/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 494938

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Former sawmill, Inverarish, Raasay This was a water-powered estate sawmill, stone-built, with an ashlar wheel gable. It was driven by a high-breast or backshot waterwheel 1.01 by 3.05m. By 1976 it had a corrugated iron roof, but it probably originally had a steeper-pitched slated roof. This view shows the mill from the west, with its unusually well-built wheel gable, and the wheel, which unusually has only four spokes. This sawmill was presumably built by the Raasay estate to supply fence-posts and other sawn timber for estate needs. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
