Scope and Content Gauge basin, Craigmaddie Reservoir, Milngavie, Dunbartonshire The Craigmaddie Reservoir was built in connection with the extension of gravity water supply from Loch Katrine to Glasgow in 1888 1896 This is the point where the water from Loch Katrine enters the reservoir. This view shows the end of the aqueduct which brings the water from Loch Katrine, under the pediment. The basins are used to gauge the flow of water into the reservoir, and to collect any silt accompanying the water. The expansion of the Loch Katrine scheme was necessitated in part by the increase in the population of the urban area, but also by the introduction of water-borne sewage disposal, as more hygienic than dry closets.
