Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 494297

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Intake, Craigmaddie Reservoir, Milngavie, Dunbartonshire The Craigmaddie Reservoir was built in connection with the extension of gravity water supply from Loch Katrine to Glasgow in 1888 1896 This is the point where the water in the reservoir is drawn out for supply to the city. This view shows the masonry intake tower and its approach gangway. There are sluices at the base of the tower to control the flow of water into the supply pipes. On the right is the concrete inner face of the reservoir dam. The expansion of the Loch Katrine scheme was necessitated in part by the increase in the population of the urban area, but also by the introduction of water-borne sewage disposal, as more hygienic than dry closets.
