Scope and Content Screen, Craigmaddie Reservoir, Milngavie, Dunbartonshire The Craigmaddie Reservoir was built in connection with the extension of gravity water supply from Loch Katrine to Glasgow in 1888 1896 This cast-iron structure houses plant for screening water before it enters the main supply pipes. This view shows the cast iron cover for the screening plant, which was designed and supplied by Glenfield and Kennedy, Kilmarnock.. The screens themselves are in a chamber sunk into the ground, and remove solid material from the water. The expansion of the Loch Katrine scheme was necessitated in part by the increase in the population of the urban area, but also by the introduction of water-borne sewage disposal, as more hygienic than dry closets.
