Fort Augustus, Bridge of Oich General View

SC 493330

Description Fort Augustus, Bridge of Oich General View

Date 18/5/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 493330

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Former wooden road bridge, Fort Augustus, Inverness-shire This is a four-span wooden bridge built on to a surviving span of an older masonry bridge. The designer of the wooden section was CR Manners. This view shows the bridge from the west. The character of the surviving masonry arch and pier, with the massive triangular cutwater suggests a pre-18th century date. The braced beam structure of the wooden section is a typical late feature. This bridge was bypassed during the improvement of the Fort William-Inverness road undertaken in the early 1930s. It has lost part of its wooden deck, but otherwise appears to be in reasonable condition. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
