Scope and Content Reinforced concrete road bridge, Fort Augustus, Inverness-shire This is a three-span reinforced concrete bridge, with arched profiles to the spans, and bull-nosed rubble facing to the spandrels. Giving a 'traditional' appearance. The designers were Blyth and Blyth, engineers. with Mears and Carus-Wilson, architects. This view shows the bridge from the west. The prominent triangular cutwaters and masonry finish belie the underlying structure, only the length and flatness of the central span suggesting that this is not a masonry structure. This bridge was built as part of the improvement of the Fort William-Inverness road undertaken in the early 1930s. At that time there was public concern about the raw appearance of concrete structures in scenic areas, hence the cosmetic treatment. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
