Scope and Content Bonawe Ironworks, Argyll This was built as a charcoal-fuelled iron-smelting works, one of five established in the Scottish highlands in the 18th century, This one was set up by partners in the Newland Company of Lancashire, to exploit the scrub woodlands of the area. This view shows the furnace from the north west, with the remains of the blowing and casting houses round the base. The corbelled opening on the right was the tap arch, from which the molten iron ran into sand moulds. This was the last charcoal-fuelled iron-smelting works to operate in Scotland, closing in about 1876. The sheds survived in agricultural use until the 1960s, when the Ministry of Public Buildings and Works began a programme of repair. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
