Scope and Content Former slate quarry, Easdale Island, Argyll Slates have been quarried on Easdale since the 18th century, and there are several flooded quarries on the west coast of the island, surrounded by the waste from their working, and from the dressing of slates. This view shows one of the now-flooded quarries These were drained by steam pumps introduced in the early 19th century. The slate from Easdale was the first west highland slate to be generally used outside the immediate vicinity of its production. At first the slates were made from loose material on island beaches, and quarrying began in the early 18th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
