Scope and Content General Register House, Princes Street, Edinburgh Register House was the first major work to be started in the New Town in 1774. Designed by Robert and James Adam, and completed in 1826 by Robert Reid, it was one of the first buildings in Britain designed for the specific purpose of storing archives. The two-storeyed building has a concealed basement. The plain façade has a pedimented centrepiece with four Corinthian columns, which projects slightly; the projection and the columns are repeated at each end, with corner turrets. Register House holds many of the major documents of Scottish history, including the charter of King David I to Melrose Abbey in 1140, the Declaration of Arbroath of 1320, and the Scottish copy of the 1707 Treaty of Union.
