Scope and Content St Andrew's Church (now St Andrew and St George), George Street, Edinburgh St Andrew's Church was built in George Street in 1782-4 following the loss of its intended site in St Andrew Square. This shallow space suited the oval, or strictly elliptical, church of which this seems to be the first important example in Britain. This elliptical church, designed by Major Andrew Frazer, has a pedimented portico with four Corinthian columns, and a slender tower and spire. A prize of £10.50 offered by the Town Council for the best design of the church, was awarded in 1781 to David Kay, architect, in respect of what was called 'Captain Frazer's Plan'. In 1789 a spire was added. The total cost of the building was £5,183. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
