Scope and Content Entrance to St Cuthbert's Parish Church, Colinton, Edinburgh St Cuthbert's Parish Church stands on the north side of the bridge across the Water of Leith in the elbow of the river at Colinton village. The present building dates from 1908, but there has been a church on or near this site for over 900 years. The entrance is by an arched opening in the rubble-built wall, part of which consists of the gable-end of the mid-18th-century Offertory House. Further to the south is the 'dominie's' house, a low stone cottage built c.1811 for the village schoolmaster. The children of the village were first taught in the church until 1663, when a parochial school was built nearby. In 1811, the building was 'too ruinous' to be repaired, and a new school was built 'on the bank south of the new street of the village' Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
